The biggest public health problem no one is talking about. Is this you?
Inadequate and unhealthily low levels of Vitamin D is the biggest public health crisis that you've never heard of.
One only need to contemplate two facts to try to comprehend the magnitude of this public health problem:
Many studies show a correlation between low Vitamin D levels and an increased risk of disease and mortality. Many studies, as in tens of thousands of studies. One particular study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition observed over 9000 participants over 9 years, observing their Vitamin D levels and whether they died or not. The conclusion of this study is quoted here: "Conclusions: In this large cohort study, serum 25(OH)D concentrations were inversely associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. In particular, vitamin D deficiency [25(OH)D concentration <30 nmol/L] was strongly associated with mortality from all causes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and respiratory diseases."
Roughly 90% of American adults are below optimal Vitamin D levels. See GrassRootsHealth.net for details.
These two facts put together create a recipe for disaster.
But, the solution is simple: Be intentional about your Vitamin D levels. You are responsible for supplementing or getting enough healthy sun exposure to create adequate levels.
You can be a Vitamin D hero. And Vitamin D heroes are public health heroes.
