Is his health the missing puzzle piece?
When discussing the heartbreaking topic of infertility, the role of the male partners' health is often overlooked. The focus tends to be on the female partner and her reproductive health. Let's not forget that the male partner is half of the equation!
Research published in 2015 in the journal Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology took a closer look at male fertility in relation to Vitamin D levels.
In comparing the rate of successful pregnancy amongst 90 couples, they divided the couples into two categories:
The male had Vitamin D levels above 30 ng/ml
The male had Vitamin D levels below 30 ng/ml
As we look at the results of this study, keep in mind that the optimal Vitamin D level is in a range of 40 - 60 ng/ml.
The couples that had a male with a Vitamin D level above 30 ng/ml had a successful pregnancy rate 3x higher than the couples with Vitamin D levels below 30 ng/ml.
If you are struggling with infertility, it may be time for both partners to have their Vitamin D levels checked.
If you know a couple that is having trouble getting and staying pregnant, consider sharing this article with them. Unfortunately, Vitamin D levels may have never crossed their mind in their quest to improve their fertility.
